Most people assume that feeling tired, sluggish or just plain off is a normal part of getting older. But according to functional medicine expert Dr. Brett, it is not normal at all. It is a communication problem. And the good news is that when you understand what is actually happening inside your cells, you have real options.

In this Wellness Wednesday conversation, Shauna sits down with Dr. Brett, a chiropractor and functional medicine physician who has spent decades helping patients get to the root cause of why they feel the way they feel. Dr. Brett brings a refreshingly simple framework to a complex topic — using the analogy of relationships and communication to explain exactly what is happening at the cellular level when our energy, stamina and vitality start to decline.

The conversation cuts through the noise of conventional medicine and gets to the foundational question most doctors never ask: is the body's communication system working, and if not, why not?

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • Why your body's cells communicate like a relationship — and what happens when that communication breaks down
  • The difference between managing symptoms and actually addressing the root cause of how you feel
  • What oxidative stress really is and why it is the number one thing blocking your cells from functioning optimally
  • Why you might be doing everything right and still not feeling better — and what the hoarder's closet analogy teaches us about cellular healing
  • The critical difference between supplementing deficiencies and actually activating genetic pathways in the cell
  • How Protandim NRF2 reduces oxidative stress by an average of 40% in 30 days and up to 70% in 3 months
  • The role of NRF1 in mitochondrial energy production and why energy is the foundation of every single process in the body
  • What the NAD pathway does and why all three pathways working together is the foundation of true cellular health
  • Why medications can block cellular communication over time and what to do about it

Key Takeaways

  • Your symptoms are not the problem — they are messages from your body about a communication breakdown happening at the cellular level
  • Oxidative stress is the noise that prevents your cells from hearing, processing and responding to what your body needs
  • You can supplement deficiencies or you can activate entire pathways — and activating pathways is exponentially more powerful
  • Healing takes time because the body needs to clear decades of cellular debris before it can function optimally again
  • The Tri-Synergizer — Protandim NRF2, NRF1 and NAD — targets all three stages of cellular communication: clearing the noise, producing energy and activating the response
  • It truly starts with yellow — the science behind NRF2 is where this whole journey began

Whether you have been struggling with low energy, reduced stamina, hormone imbalance, or just not feeling like yourself, this episode gives you a completely new way to think about your health from the inside out.

Welcome to Wellness Wednesday, everybody. We are so thrilled that you are here. Tonight we're talking about a really important topic, I think, is sometimes when you just feel off, like you're like, why am I tired? Why do I have no stamina? Why do I have no vitality left anymore? And that's the topic we're gonna get dive into tonight with Dr. Brett as our expert. He has so much information to share with you tonight, so much wisdom on this topic, because this is the reason many, many people go to see him. They just don't understand, right? And so just to tell you just a little bit about myself and my story, that is actually my story, is about 10 years ago, I think it was, my doctor reached out and said, listen, I found the future of wellness. And it took me down this path of learning and wanting to explore and understand, right, natural modalities to improve my health, to be become a lot more preventative instead of reactive when it came to my health. And I'll be honest with you, it was a new path for me. But I've become a wellness warrior and I thought all those things were normal. Back I was 36 at the time, and I thought, yeah, I was tired. Yeah, I was waking up with mild headaches every morning. Yeah, I was getting allergy problems seasonally in living in Nebraska. I just was exhausted, I was unmotivated, like all these things, but yet I thought it was just normal. And I have learned that is not the case, that is not normal. And there is a lot of things that can be happening inside the body that we can help when we just understand. So that's what we're gonna talk about tonight. And Dr. Brett is here to really, really dive into this topic. And I'm so thrilled. Um, Dr. Brett is a chiropractor, he's in functional medicine, he has so much experience, he's trained other physicians, he's had his own practice for lots and lots and lots of years and seen thousands of different patients. More importantly, been able to help people really, really get to the root cause and really understand. He's a wonderful educator and really understand what is happening inside of the body. And today we were discussing communication of the body. So, Dr. B, let's just dive in and talk about this idea of how the body communicates.

SPEAKER_00

I go through a lot of processes trying to help people understand, like their bodies are powerful. And like I just saw a guy today kind of case in point, he's been struggling for man, since November, and he's been to probably 12 different doctors, and they're looking for a problem that they can blame these things that he's have going on. He's got some massive things going on, but they're looking for a problem, but they're not finding a problem. Like they're not finding a disease. And because of that, they've had no solutions and he's super frustrated. He's got a lot of things going on that aren't right, but they can't find a problem. But they're not looking at one of the simplest concepts is, and this is really what you guys all understand is your body, when it works right, we don't even think about it. And it really comes down to like, what is it that makes a makes a body like just do what it's supposed to do and manifest health? Like, what is it that allows the process? It really goes down to communication. So I want you to think of your body and specifically your cells, because every all of us are made up of like trillions of cells. They work based on a relationship. So I mean, we've all been in relationships, but like if a relationship's good, there's a there's there's got to be communication going on for the relationship to be successful. So for a body to be successful at healing or manifesting health, and health would be like mental health, like right being able to be like emotionally resilient and handle stress and traumas, and it can be physical health, like just be able to like you know do your normal activities or perform, have good energy. It all comes back down. Can a cell hear and understand what the, what the what the communication is? Can the cell then take in this information, make sense of it, and decide what needs to be done? And then can it do the do to manifest the thing? So let's just say any one of you, like I just really wish I had more energy. I wish I slept better, or I wish that you know I didn't hurt. Well, why what's the where's the where's the missing communication going on that's not allowing us to manifest the health is? And again, this is not how physicians are trained. We are trained when we go in, we are trained to look for a problem, and then and most of those problems come through looking at symptoms that we're then trying to manage the symptom versus understanding what is this symptom telling me about this the communication breakdown. Does that make sense?

SPEAKER_01

It does to me. It does to me. Put a one in the chat if that makes sense to you. I think one of the things he said, I was like, I think if you would ask anybody on this call, what are the two most important things in any relationship, we'd all say trust and communication, I think, right? Like honesty and communication. And I think that just like aha moment for me. I was like, duh, that's just like the body, right? If if things aren't communicating properly, things are gonna go awry.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And here's what I really want people to understand. So you uh you know a lot more about your body than you realize. And but we we need to understand, okay, if it's about communication, what is it that actually messes with the communication? Like all of us have cell phones, and we and if you're in a relationship, you understand like if someone is not talking to you or you can't hear them, you're not gonna understand what they need or what they want. So think of this as your cell. So there's there's gotta be things that uh inter impede with the cell's ability to understand what's going on. And so if it can't hear anything, so if it can't like take in information, it's really, really difficult then for it to decide what needs to be done. And so just like in relationships, like you, if you're again, like I know this has never happened in my life, right? But what if I wasn't listening to my wife and she's talking to me? Right? That could be bad. Right? No, have you guys ever heard you're not listening to me?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, well, no, I always say, are you listening to me?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, right. Yeah, that's that's probably a better question. So I want you to think, I want you to understand your body has been programmed to function optimally. It is it is literally programmed to do that. And and if it's not, we need to understand what is this that's that's blocking that communication, and then what is our role in improving that communication line so the cells can manifest health?

SPEAKER_01

I love it. So let's just dive in. If we're not feeling optimally, we have to figure out a couple things, right? What in this communication process? One, you mentioned right away, can our cells hear, right? It can it absorb the information? What does that look like if it can't? What do we need to do? What are some things we could do differently to make sure that process is working, let alone the cells communicating with one another? How do we make sure that our cells can hear, our cells can absorb, right? Like the information.

SPEAKER_00

So here's the key point with that. Like the cell's ability to hear what's going on has to do with the cell, the health of the cell and getting rid of the noise. Like if you're talking to somebody in a big crowd, there's all this noise that impedes with your ability to hear and understand. All those things that impede the cell's ability to hear relate to inflammation. So there are things that create it or inflammations, and all of those things are like noise that don't allow the cell to heal or to hear. Again, so that would relate back to like a poor diet. That would relate back to like over-exercise or not exercising, it could relate to like, you know, purposely not sleeping, it can relate to just taking medications that block the cell's ability to hear. Like if you have pain and you're taking the pain medication, you're not your cells can't feel the pain, it's not sure what the problem is. So anything that would basically impede the cell's ability to hear, it is because it creates more inflammation. And we describe that. So this the cell deflammation we call the cell deflammation, there, the cell's exhaust, we call it oxidative stress. So if we can think all sorts of things that you do or don't do, so not sleeping, overly stressed, eating really bad foods, all that just creates more inflammation, which creates more oxidative stress. What that is, that just it makes it more noise. And so I would say just think about the things that you can do that would help your body heal faster, do more of that, and then do less of the other things. But then even if you're doing all those things, so if you're doing all these right things and it's still not working as well as you would want it to, that means there's something going on with the cell's ability to quench those that oxidative stress. And that's where it comes back into understanding there's a process inside your cells that is responsible for cleaning up the bad stuff, which it's called oxidative stress.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so let's talk about that just a little bit more because I do believe I come across a lot of people that are saying, I feel like I'm doing all the right things today, right? Like, and I've been doing all the right things for a while, and it still doesn't seem to make progress towards optimal, right? And sometimes I have learned over the years, right, through education like this, that it's because of prior buildup. Correct. Is that correct? Is that I mean, like, am I assuming that that building is having noise for too long?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so a lot of it's like you'll hear us saying, Well, when I turn 40 or when I turn 50 or whatever. And so why did you start feeling that then? Because the cell couldn't keep up any longer. And I know a lot of us, we have a closet in our house, right? And you go up on that closet, like, whoa, there's a lot of stuff in that closet. And that's what's happening to your cell. So if you're doing the right things and not wanting the response you're looking for, many times it's because there's so much in that closet, it's gonna take a minute for your body to clean up enough like of the just the debris to be for the cell to be more efficient to give you more energy. So imagine having a house that's a hoarder's house, and you're just trying to get from one side of the house to the other, and there's so much stuff in the way, it's super hard to get there. And you think, well, I started, you know, cleaning out a part of the pathway. Well, it may take a minute. It may take a minute of re- of putt quit putting stuff in. So if you just quit putting stuff in, that's only part of the pathway. What if you improve the part of the pathway that allows your body to get rid of more stuff? So you want to do both. And so some people they get frustrated because I just they just started and they think, why am I not better yet? It'd be like if I and think about the level of insult in a relationship. So if I, you know, said something not super nice to my wife, like she's gonna forgive me, but if I did something like at a much deeper level, you know, heaven forbid, like to say that you know, I I locked your trust, it's gonna take a lot longer to repair that communication and that trust than it than it would. So the cells are no different. So if you are nice to them for a day, they'll they'll probably be like, yeah, you sh they're just kidding.

unknown

Right?

SPEAKER_01

But if we start changing these behaviors, I remember what you did to me a year ago. That's what your cells might think, right? Like if you haven't been, if you just started treating them nice, just all of a sudden.

SPEAKER_00

What did I say? I don't remember.

SPEAKER_01

Dr. Brett and I are good friends. You've never been mean to me.

SPEAKER_00

But it's just the honesty is this. So if you're to expecting a doctor or anybody else, a coach to fix you, that's a problem. So if you're going in and you get information and they're not having this conversation, it's not because they don't want to. They just they they they're trying to fix the symptom because that's what they're that's what we're paid to do. What we're saying here in the Wellness Wednesday, let's talk about truth and let's talk about communication. You need to remove those things that are going to create more noise, but you can't just do it for a week or a day or a month. It's a cumulative effect over time. And unfortunately, you might say, well, I'm really young and I might I'm always struggling. There are people that when they're born into this life, that their ability to get rid of the bad stuff are not as efficient as somebody else's. Right? You know, I'm six foot two almost, Sean is not quite that tall. So we have different genetics that that that, but again, she's much prettier than I am. So there are different, you know, abilities that your cells have. We want to maximize those. So I'm gonna tell you like, no matter who you ever see, work with removing those things that are noise, your diet, your sleep, your stress levels, those behaviors, because that's less noise. And then you want to say, okay, if that's the case, and I feel like I'm I'm I want to heal faster, you have a choice. You can you can supplement like by trying to give your body the nutrients needs to deficiency, and or you can address the pathways in your cells that basically speed up the removal of those things. So at Life Management, what we do, we use very specific, you know, patented products that allow us to tap into the cells process and systems to maximize those systems. So for me, that's why like having as a physician, like no matter who comes in to see me, a foundational thing is I want them on proton and nerve two, because that's the system that gets rid of the stuff that we put in our bodies that is bad in your body. It's what you call oxidative stress. So if you haven't done any of that, or that's new to you, just understand that there's several key components for a cell to communicate. One, it has to get rid of the noise, and that's the oxidative stress. So that's why we use what we call proton nerve two. And then you have to have the ability to have enough energy to make the things. Like every process in the cell, whether it's getting rid of something or building a new building, it takes energy. And there's systems in our body that allow us to make that. We call them mitochondria. So there are ways to improve the brush because you're born with an X amount of mitochondria, but you can increase that production based upon what nutrients you give it. And I see what they call nutrient drummers with activating genetic pathways.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm gonna highlight a couple of things you just said because I think they're so powerful, and maybe some of you have never heard this before. You can he said you can supplement deficiencies in your body, which can help, or you can turn on entire pathways to activate systems and processes. I didn't know the difference. I'm gonna be honest, Dr. Brett. I did not know the difference. I didn't, I thought all natural products, if they're plant-based, right, natural ingredients were all supplements. I had no idea that there was a different category of this that was really about activating and turning your body's processes on, that is like how much more powerful truly is that over simply supplementing?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I love what you said to your doctor said about what they found. Like the word was like you fed, they found the future of wellness. The future of wellness. And and that is, I 100% agree with that. Like if you're in the farming community or if you're in the animal science community, you understand that the the nutrients you put into the soil matter what crops you get and also the animals. Well, that's that's been the model for a really, really long time. Until they did the human genome project, where they looked at studying genes, they're looking for a way to fix the genes. But what they found is there's very specific upstream genes when they when we can maximize them, it has a huge impact. So instead of studying a supplement like any more zinc or more magnesium, which you should eat and need to have, so you need to supplement those if you're not getting your diet, there were specific pathways that were like switches that you when you turn them on, or you like you actually focused in on those, you could maximally improve the body's ability to handle the noise. So instead of saying, hey, we're just trying to get more magnesium, which so if the race forever has been, okay, I need to make a better form of magnesium to absorb, to be more efficient absorbing and working better, so you'll hear all these things about different forms of magnesium. But what if I say, okay, there's a specific assembly line in your body that gets rid of the noise? It gets rid of the itises and inflammation. Is there a way to target that system so I maximizing that system? So let's say somebody that's diagnosed with a condition, whatever it is, theirs works at 80% and mine works at 100%, I can still get theirs as close to their 100% or their 80%. Especially if they're functioning at 40, which most people are functioning really low, if I target that, as opposed to just adding in an extra mineral. Now, and here's the other side of that. If you're taking nutrients that your body's not absorbing, that's a problem. And so part of that, the reason why people will tell, oh, I've taken this, it doesn't work. Well, they wanted me to take it long enough, or it wasn't one that's designed to activate systems. And also a lot of it may do is their body's so jacked up that it can't absorb the nutrients it's getting. Because we spent so many times.

SPEAKER_01

It's too full of noise. Yeah, it's too full of noise.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it is too full of noise, and people have done so many things to like manage their symptoms to block out the communication that there's when you do take too many medications or you ignore your body too much, it's a lot like ignoring your spouse. In a relationship, you'll get miscommunication and then it gets like uncomfortable, and then it eventually can die. A relationship can die. So the cells are no different. If the cells have to like, you know, keep yelling at you and keep yelling at you, they pretty soon quit talking to you, and then they then then there's massive problems. So what we're suggesting, like vanishes, and with what we do with Wellness Wednesday, is understand, like, let's go back to the foundation of cellular communication. All right, and just understand prescriptions have their place, they're designed to handle and manage very specific things, but to be used long term, unless it's like for very specific situations, means you're taking over the function of a cell that the of some function of the cell. So going back to removing the communication, you know, removing the itises or things that reduces the communication, please like work on improving those habits. And you know, most of us know what it is. Like we, you know, if you're not going to feed it to a dog, don't feed it yourself, right? You just you know, you know, just remove your stress, those things like that. But then target your activators, we call them activators, that allow your cells to do one thing, which is get rid of the noise, and that's what we call protein nerve two, resistance oxygen stress.

SPEAKER_01

I want to make sure everybody knows that's one little yellow pill a day. Like literally, it couldn't be more simple. Five herbs that are patented to turn on that process.

SPEAKER_00

So this is where it started. We call it it starts with yellow because this whole process that her doctor said, it started with this science, the human genome project. Then scientists saying, hey, this is a big deal. Here's the genes that regulate how well the body can actually get rid of the crap. And then they targeted that pathway until they developed a combination of natural plant substances that work so well, it increased the production to where it reduced that burden on the cell by an average of 40% in 30 days up to 70% in three months. That's why I think it's foundationally for all of us that we should be doing that. Yes, eat clean, do all that. But to me, I think if I'm gonna do one thing, I do that. But then they we've gone from there and say, well, then the other thing with communication is cellular energy. If your body can't make energy, nothing works, right? Whether, hey, people say I have a hormone problem. Well, if you don't have energy, you can't make hormones. Well, I have, you know, you know, I have a you know, a problem with you know, my joints, tend to the ligaments. You can't repair anything. With no matter how much glucosamine you take, if you can't make up mitochondria, can't make energy, you you can't repair. So if I can improve my mitochondrial function and we target it to what's called nerf one, pretend nerf one, we can target the energy production.

unknown

Right?

SPEAKER_00

So here's what's kind of cool. So think of it this way. So you're talking, me and Sean are talking. I gotta understand what she's saying, then I have to decide what she wants, and then I have to do the do the thing that she needs. So inside your cells, like your cells have to like hear, right? So get rid of the noise, then they have to like take the information in to this part of the cell that says, okay, guys, we need to make this thing. Like, so Shauna wants to make more muscle. It has to say, okay, then it has to turn on another pathway. We call it the entity pathway. And entity pathway is like it's the format that tells everybody else that we need to make this thing because Shauna wants to build more muscle. Those three pathways have to work together.

SPEAKER_01

I love this analogy so much. Like it's just like a normal conversation. We got to be able to hear, we got to be able to think with the energy, right? And then we got to be able to respond. That's really what it's about. And those three products really, really, really activate all three of the pathways that do those processes. To me, when you talked about prescriptions, I am a person who, if I don't need them, I don't want them, right? Because in my mind, not that they're wrong, I'm so thankful we have them, right? For for people who need them, but But I believe that they override, right? And we've talked about this, they override the system so much sometimes when it really is common sense. Why are we trying to override it the system? For maybe we need to temporarily, right? Maybe we need to temporarily, but long term, why would we try and override the system when we could just get the system working right?

SPEAKER_00

Right. I do believe that like there are times you need help with communication with a counselor, right? Or some major problems. But do you want it forever?

SPEAKER_01

I'm married to a therapist. I know that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, right. Yeah. And don't therapise me, right?

SPEAKER_01

He's already diagnosed you, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I have a sign out in my lobby that says, keep talking, I'm diagnosing you. So I'm with you on that. What I'm suggesting, guys, uh, if this is a new concept to you, what I want you to start thinking, okay, and if you're taking medications, it's fine. Just like if but you feel like, hey, I really want to work on improving how in which my cells work, let's talk about this. Let's work on that communication cycle and let's let's let's utilize people. Like that's why we have these conversations that are thinking like us, that makes it give them some ideas. Because at the end of the day, if a cell doesn't work right, it's super hard for then another cell to communicate with that cell, and that cell and another cell makes up what's what we call a tissue. Let's just call it a thyroid gland. And then that tissue makes up a system, we call it the endocrine system, that talks to each other. And that would eventually allow your hormones to be balanced. Or if it's a different system, whether it's a the liver that turned into a whole other system, we it's important that all those systems can work together. And if we think this way, when you're having a symptom, don't go right to like trying to get rid of the symptom. Let's ask the question what is this symptom telling me? And what is there a communication breakdown that I'm having? And what's my role in that? And am I if is the therapy I'm doing targeting, improving the communication, or is it blocking the communication? If it's blocking the communication, like what's the end result of that? Again, there are times it's short term, yes. Like massive pain, right? I don't want to feel the pain why we fix the problem, why we correct something, makes perfect sense. And there are individuals that for whatever reason their body no longer makes a thing, you need to supplement it. And if that's if that happened to be like insulin and diabetics, guess what? You need that. But what about like a peptide? Like, how long do you want to supplement something your body should be making? Your body has to make these things, so if you're not making it, you have your two things are happening. If you're not making it, your body gets lazy. Okay, and then number two, if you're not making it and you're putting it in your body, your body then cannot regulate the same. So whether that's a hormone or whether that's a peptide, or whether that's like something else, our goal is to support improve the communication so that whatever the system is struggling, it can first be repaired. Because once the system's repaired, let's just say it's like a digestive tract, once that digestive tract is repaired, then that it can rest it can basically be restored back to its normal function and then optimized. And then once it's like that, it can now regulate the process on its own. Now, this may seem oversimplified, but this is exactly how your cells work. And as we get older, just like an older car, like you're you can have other noise you might have to focus on. And that's where the supplement stuff does come in. If you're dealing with a certain process in your body that's going on, let's just say joints, tended ligaments, and you're not giving it all the right nutrients to, you still need to do that.

SPEAKER_01

So I think that this is so so profound. So going back to what the topic was, if you have not great vitality, not great stamina, you have low energy, it really, really, really makes sense to think about the cell communication and what's happening in communication between the systems and your body. And so just to recap, the three products that I take every day and I have for, I don't know, nine years, and Dr. Brett takes every day and recommends to everybody for that communication process is what we call Protandum NRF two, which helps get rid of the noise, Protandum NRF one, which helps boost that energy in the communication so that we can think through the process. And then number three is called Protandum NAD. Yes, they're all three called Protandum, and all three together, they're called the Tri-Synergizer. So if you want to learn more about that, get back to the person who invited you so they can share all the science, all the information, all the patents backing why we believe this is so crucial that we continue to get this information out to the world so people can work on their communication system so they don't have to worry so much about all the symptoms all the time because their foundation will be working correctly. So thank you, Dr. B. I appreciate you so much. Everybody give Dr. B some love. He is a super, super busy man and one of the best educators I've ever met. Thank you for making things simple for all of us to understand, Dr. B. We appreciate you.

SPEAKER_00

All right, yeah. See you later. Thank you, Jonathan.
