Let's talk about peptides and what they actually do to the body
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode, we explore the science behind peptides and how they function within the body’s natural signaling systems. While peptides are often discussed in wellness and longevity spaces, few people truly understand how they influence metabolism, recovery, and cellular communication.
Joined by Dr. Brett, a health and wellness expert with over 20 years of experience, we break down what peptides actually are, how the body uses them, and when they can support healing versus when the body should lead its own recovery processes.
If you are curious about energy, metabolism, recovery, or simply want to understand your body on a deeper level, this conversation offers a clear and practical perspective on long term wellness.

SPEAKER_00All right, all right, you guys. Welcome to Wellness Wednesday. Excited that you're here to spend a little time with me. My name is Dr. Brett Brimhall. I'm a chiropractor, live in the Phoenix area. I've been in a holistic space my whole life. I've been a part of nutritional formulating, nutritional formulating, been a part of uh teaching physicians since 1995. Uh I love to teach people and I'd love to help people get better. It's just it's just my jam. So tonight we're gonna talk about kind of an interesting topic, one that's been on my my heart a lot a long time, because I'm seeing a lot of confusion in the world right now in relationship to this topic, topic. So uh for those of you who aren't familiar with this Wednesday wellness that we've done for a lot of years, is that we are a community part of a company called Life Vantage. Our goal here is to educate people, empower people to become healthier, and truly understand what the power of activation is. So I'm gonna start off tonight by talking about what activation is. So activation is what you feel like when everything works right in your body. Like activation when it works right, you don't even think about it. So activation is where your body heals and repairs like it's supposed to, and you don't even think about it. So how you feel today, how low, how good your energy level is, how well you feel like you're controlling inflammation, how how well you sleep is directly equal to how healthy your cells are and how activated they are. Think of activation as your cells communicating like they're supposed to and having everything they need to do the job they're meant to do. So when there's a high stress happening, they are able to handle that stress and deal with it. If there's a situation where they need to heal something, they can do that and move on. Now, what we're gonna talk about tonight is a conversation that you're seeing a lot. If you haven't heard of peptides, you're probably under a rock or just maybe you're just not in that space. But I can't talk to people every day, any day, and not hear about peptides. And, you know, throw in the chat like if you guys have heard of peptides and maybe what you've heard about them, and even if you've tried them and why you've thought about maybe utilizing them. Because what I want you to understand about peptides, number one, yeah, they're they're everywhere. It's unbelievable. Like it's just you can't, like you can't, if we're talking about peptides and your phone's listening to you, guess what's going to show up on your feet later? A lot of stuff on peptides. And I'm gonna talk to you about a key element when it comes to peptides, but it is specifically this. Whatever your body can make, it can regulate. Whatever your body does not make or you put in from the outside, it does not regulate, it cannot regulate. Which means that no matter what you put in your body, whether it's a hormone replacement or a peptide replacement, understand that's coming from an outside source that eventually your body needs to make on its own. And again, so foundationally different what we do with LifeNage is the things that we take are designed to help the body make the things that it needs. That's very, very, very different. Okay. All right. So let's talk about what a peptide is. So I'm gonna just use one for instance. Just you guys have heard of this. You've probably heard of all this weight loss stuff going on out there. Just in the chat, you guys throw in the chat, what is the weight loss drug out there you've heard of out there that they peptide?
SPEAKER_01Okay, there's a bunch of them. Right? GLP1, Ozempic, Manjaro, okay.
SPEAKER_00Right, so there's a few of them, wagabe, right? So these are names for medications that are making something that mimics what's called GLP1, glucogen-like peptide one. It's it's it's even in the name, glucogen-like peptide one. It's a peptide. So think of a peptide as this. Peptide is a messenger, it's a molecule made up of amino acids. So a bunch of proteins are hooked together a certain way that look very specific, that that communicates with different parts of your body. And this particular hormone, GLP1, is made in your intestinal cell. That's where it's supposed to be made. And I'll summarize this later with a slide, just so you guys know this. It's made in your intestinal cells, and when your body makes it, you don't crave food the same. It's like it's kind of that regulation of like I'm full, I've had enough. It does that by slowing down the gastric, what's called peristalsis. So when your body naturally makes this hormone, it's it tells you, hey, you're full, you need to be done. It also tells your brain to quit craving food because you're you're full, you're done. Now, how many of you throw one in the chat, it sometimes ate more than you should, right? Or you started eating something and you couldn't, you just couldn't put it down. You couldn't just have one. All right. Understand that the reason why this happens is because your cells aren't communicating with that GLP1 protein like it should, to where you're saying, oh, I'm done. Because GLP1 has what they call receptors. So think of the peptide as a key and as the receptor as the key hole that fit together that then causes response like opening the door. When that peptide hits the stomach, it says, Whoa, we're full, GLP1, and we don't need any more, but also tells your brain, we're full, don't put any more in my mouth. That's what it does. Now, when your body makes it, it says, Oh, I need 5% more because we're almost full and it makes it. If you take it from the outside in, for instance, let's say if you did an injectable or whatever, you put in a dose of whatever it is, and it's it may not be the exact dose you need, but it will cause you to not be hungry and be by the byproduct, you can in fact lose weight. Does that make sense? That's why people utilize them. But because sometimes there are there's side effects from that because of too much of a signal, there are people that will lose weight, but they lose muscle mass. Now I want to be very, very clear. I'm not anti-peptide. I'm not pro-peptide necessarily. I'm I'm pro, let's do what's right for the human and have a very clear conversation about what that really means and understand, like if I adjust somebody and I don't tell them there could be consequences, that's a problem. I gotta tell them there's our risk. So no matter what you're doing, there's a benefit risk. So if you lose weight in any weight loss, specifically let's say a GOP1, if you're losing weight, what kind of weight are you losing? Are you losing muscle? Are you losing fat? Are you losing bone? Like what are you losing? Because it's all weight. Because of that, when your desire is to lose or to have a fashion metabolism and as a byproduct, hopefully maybe shed some pounds and feel better in your body, please monitor that. Monitor your body fat percentage, monitor how strong you are, monitor your relationship with food. So let's just say that somebody is, you know, that they have some of those symptoms, like I struggle with eating, right? I've struggled, I can't control what I eat, I just I'm hungry all the time. Understand that that hormone is off. And there's part of the reason why that's off is because the world that we live in, the diets that we have, and because the food industry has been owned by pharmaceutical industries for too long. And there's been, and it's very quick, you if you gotta look up something later, look up American food fraud, and and you'll realize a lot of the foods that you've been eating and our our kids have been eating are tainted with things that make you crave them. And they mess with these hormones. So just understand that's the game you're playing. Because of that, you be very methodical about what you bring in your house. It's really hard to crave something that's not in your house. If it's not there, you won't eat it as much. So I just that. So coming back to this whole peptide thing, when your body makes it, it can regulate it. So if you take a peptide from the outside source in, and let's just say eventually someone, whether they do a medication or whether they find a natural GLP one activator, there are ones out there, there's one we've made that we use. Eventually, your body has to make its own GOP1, or you're gonna get the cravings back again. So there has been some significant benefits for people when they had a massive amount of waste of lives, where they might be on that, on that GOP1, but they've had tons of side effects with it, and they're willing to deal with the side effects, but now what do they do when they try to come off it? You've got to understand that you activation is key. So if you're using a peptide, let's just say it's an injectable or not, it's very critical to understand what it is that it's you're trying to accomplish, and what are the signals that that's that peptide's like doing, and what's the end result you want, and how are you gonna get your body to make the peptide like it's supposed to, again, once you come off the injectable? If that's what you're gonna do. Like I understand, no matter what, right? I always laugh. People say, Well, I want to lose weight. Say, well, you change your diet and you lose the weight, but then you can you you quit doing what what made you successful. Like that makes zero sense. So at the end of the day, your body, if it's if you're gonna have it happen from the inside out, your body needs to be able to do it. Are we clear on that? All right. That's that's my soapbox for right now. So I want to talk about this because I'm having I've had both camps. So I teach physicians a lot, and so I have a huge camp of physicians that actually use these peptides in their practices. Okay? And I and I'm always focused on activation first. Now, why do I say that? Because if your body's not doing it, that's a problem. You ended up where you are because your body wasn't doing it. So for me, activation is always first. Always, always, always. You have to activate the cell to be able to do what's designed to do. And if your body will make it, it can regulate it. If you if you decide I'm gonna go ahead and like bring something outside in, understand that there has to be an end result of what that's gonna look like as far as, okay, how do I come off of that? All right. But there's also some people that I'm watching, and think there's some and there's people that do things right, and there's people who do things, in my opinion, not to say not as right, that's gonna cause some issues. Let's take, for instance, one of these peptides that I hear a lot about, and you guys tell me who on here can tell me what the what they call the wolverine peptide is? And what well, there's two peptides that make up the wolverine wolverine peptide. I mean, this is just more for fun factor. They use this particular peptide because it speeds up healing. Now, is there a time where that's beneficial? Absolutely. Yeah, there you go. Well, part of it, you got one of them, BB157, there's one called TB500. Anyway, you don't need to know that. But so if you hear about this, here's what's important about understanding this. When people are coming in, they're dealing with like they're not healing as fast as they want, though they had an injury or they don't want they want to avoid surgery. If I had somebody coming in like that, right, and then like, look, I'm not healing. Like I've I've my joints are struggling, I'm not healing well, I've got a lot of muscoskeletal problems, my back kills me all the time. I'm gonna think, first of all, what tissue is involved and how can I activate it? So I want you to think about that, no matter what your goal is, like, you know what? I'm I've got I can't think straight. Well, I want you to think about first of all, like what does that part of your body need in order to function right? And is there a way to activate that? So when it comes to this particular hormone here, this peptide, they call it, is that it triggers the body to speed up healing, but it can only heal based on what it has. Does that make sense? So if I'm thinking about like something like a shoulder injury, if I don't give it collagen, if I don't give it an activated coronary collagen, I'm gonna minimize my the benefit that person would get. So I'm always gonna start with activation. So I'm gonna use an activated liquid collagen with protonum nerf two a hundred percent of the time. Because those are two switches that control and regulate the body how fast it heals, and then gives your body the component it needs to do the healing. Okay, so that's why the conversation at the end of the day I want you guys to look up. I'm gonna show you a few peptides out there because you're gonna hear about this. But I want you to throw in the chat, like if there's one thing you can improve about how you feel, what would it be? So just throw it in the chat. Like, what if there's one thing you can if you can improve about how you feel or how you function, what would it be? Hey, I want to just have more better movement, I want to have more energy, I want to sleep better.
SPEAKER_01Sleep, okay. What else? I want to poop. Okay, that was good. Good, good idea. Blow, more energy, movement. Heal faster, movement, focus. Okay, what else? More energy, less blow, breathe, less inflammation, better weight loss, okay? Heal faster. Okay. All right. So understand this.
SPEAKER_00Your body is trying to repair right now the best it can with what it has. Okay, it's it's doing its absolute best. All right. So bringing activation in. If you're not familiar with activation, is there are three major switches that regulate how efficiently we heal or repair. Number one is how well your body like regulates the inflammatory cat case. So when I exercise, like you exercise, you're going to create inflammation. If I eat bad food, I'm going to create inflammation. If I have high level of stress, I'm going to create inflammation. So there's a situation in your body and your cell, this is every cell that is responsible for regulating that. It's called the switch, the key is called the NR2 switch. So with protonum nerve two, you turn, you, you turn that switch on, and on average, it increases your body's ability to handle that by 40% in 30 days up to 70-70% in three months. That's one, that's one part of every cell. So let's say it's an intestinal cell, brain cell, skin cell, they all have, they all have that switch. Number two is having more energy.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_00Now, people say, well, I want more energy. Is that mental energy or physical energy? The second part of that is to have mitochondrial health, and that's the NRF1 switch. That's the switch that regulates your body's ability to produce energy. And the third one is they call NAD. That's the one that controls recycle, or what they call what they call autophagy. Those are the three primary switches I'm going to hit every single time if I can to regulate that. Now, I'm going to show you guys a slide here in a second. Okay. That that it's when I use Chat DP to kind of help me organize so you guys can see this. I'm going to show you the top peptides that are being used out there in the world. Because you're going to have, you probably, you maybe have wanted to use them before yourself or somebody else you know, and they either didn't get results or they didn't get the results they wanted, and they because they didn't start with activation. All right. It's really, really important that you start with activation because even if you get the right signal to tell the body to heal, if it doesn't have the right components, it's not going to heal at the rate it could. So when somebody here says, hey, I want to like improve stuff like a hernia, or I want to like breathe better, or I want to like, I want to heal faster, I'm thinking, number one, in my head, what does that tissue need to have a better chance of that? That's the activated liquid collagen. If you don't have those collagen components, you cannot heal at the same rate. If someone says, I want to have more focus or more concentration, that to me is utilizing axial or the brain liquid brain food, because I got to have those components there for my brain to actually be able to do what it's designed to do. If someone said, hey, you know what, I want my body, I want less bloat, then I'm thinking of gut and microbiome. That's where I'm going to consider using things to help restore the whole microbiome. All right.
SPEAKER_01So let me show a slide with you guys really quick, okay?
SPEAKER_02Where did it give me one second? Because I have it in my background here. There we go. It's almost all the anticipation, right? You guys can hardly wait. Me
Sharing Started
SPEAKER_02too.
SPEAKER_01Okay, you guys see that slide?
SPEAKER_00I don't care if you screenshot this, just don't just know Chat TP, there's probably some errors on this. But I want to kind of talk through some of this. Now, these are the primary peptides that they'll use. Remember, peptides is they give it in the messenger molecule. And what I want you to get from this slide is these are the top ones you use, like the CLP one, that's a weight loss one. People ought to use BP157, TB500, that's a Wolverine one. These other ones are specific to hormone balancing. But what you look at here, they're naturally produced in your body. I I want you to understand about all the peptides you're hearing about, the reason why people are wanting these things is because their body's not making it. Like that's please understand that. Like GOP1 is made in your intestinal tract. This empiorolin is it's made in your hypothalamus pituitary gland. A BP157 is produced in your stomach. TB500 produced in your thymus gland. Right? This you know, CHK copper, like that's produced in your blood cells. So why are people needing this from the outside in? It's because their bodies are not making it. All right, and then what I said earlier, if your body cannot make it, it cannot regulate it. Now, there are situations where there are people that will benefit highly that they need to be done right, like from maybe using these peptides, but it needs to be done right. And here's how I would think about it: are they activating first? Please activate first. Help your body regulate defamation, help your body make energy, help your body control the sertuan, which is that autophagy, and then ask, what am I trying to change? If you're trying to change gut function and you're and you want to use a whole microbiome surf, that's what I would use the P84. If I'm saying, look, my brain, I'm just having a hard time focusing and concentrating, like I don't want to inject myself, like I'd rather give myself axial. All right, and then change the behaviors that are leading to the problem to start with. All right. If there's someone like, hey, I'm struggling with sleep a ton, my mind doesn't shut off, and they say, well, what's it what's a peptide? Well, there are peptides that are produced in your hypothalamus, but why is your hypothalamus a pituitary not producing them? It's because you may be in such a stress cycle that it's not producing it because it thinks you're running away from a tiger. So ask yourself, what is it I need to do to get my body to actually not be in that space? Does that make sense? Gotta get a thumbs up on that. So if you are using peptides or you know people that are wanting to use them, please understand the foundation needs to be activation in my mind. Because you're not activating, you're not gonna get the benefit, not only short term, but long term. And you you're gonna your body's gonna have to eventually regulate it. So, like, what's the end game if somebody's gonna do a peptide? What's the end game? Like, how long am I gonna be on that? The hope is once somebody's done some of these things, it resets it and it does it on its own. You gotta do that in the right way if that's gonna be the case. And if you're activating, you're gonna have much more successful time doing that. Does that make sense? Okay. But what I really love about understanding that the reason why these peptides work for people is because your body recognizes them as something that's supposed to be there anyway. Like the body's supposed to be making them, but isn't. My question is why not? And the reason why
Sharing Stopped
SPEAKER_00that's not happening is that there's something wrong with the cell's ability to make the thing. And it usually comes down to it's too inflamed, it's not doesn't have enough energy to make it, it's more focused on something else more stressful. And for many, many people, they're in such a hyper stressed state. The body could care less about healing, it's just trying to run away from a tiger. That's what I call a dysregulated nervous system. Again, I may be biased because a chiropractor, like, my goal is to get people in a back in a state of ease because I know once I'm there, I get them in a state of ease, then activation works. All right. Now, here's kind of what I wanted you to gather from this. With some of the goals that you guys have here, and I wish I could tell you, like, and I someone mentioned here they tried the mind body GLP one and they didn't get the results they were looking for. I wish everything worked exactly the way you want it to. What I can tell you is there's there's many times more than one switch that needs to be flipped in order to get the maximum benefit. So I am definitely not opposed to people utilizing peptides as long as they're activating first and that they're doing it in the right way, understanding that if activation doesn't happen when you start or when you come off, there's gonna be a problem. So, in my opinion, this is just an opinion, okay, it's really, really important that you activate first and then really work on getting your dysregulated immune system, dysregulated nervous system calmed down. If you're in a constant stress state all the time, activation is not gonna work the way it should because your your body's just trying to keep up with the monkey race and it's not even gonna care about healing. It's just it's just trying to get to the day. And I understand there's some things in life that's you're in a really stressful state for a period of time. Just don't live there that forever and start asking different questions to get your body back in a better space. All right. But I understand there are some times where medications are are necessary and important. There are gonna be times where peptides are necessary and important. I'm gonna be honest with you on that. But if you don't get back to activation, like are you going to inject yourself forever? That's a problem. Because remember if your body can't ready it can't make it, there are only certain things that you really have to be on forever. So if you are type 1 diabetic and you can't produce insulin, like you absolutely cannot, you don't make it, guess what? You are going to be on insulin the rest of your life to a certain extent. And you know what insulin is? Insulin to peptide. Insulin to peptide. Your body's supposed to make it, but if your body cannot make it, guess what? You're going to need it. And so, yeah, there you have to take it from the outside source. And understand this. One of the reasons why people are needing peptides so much right now or utilizing so much is our nervous systems are so dysregulated and your immune system has attacked some of your own natural peptides and science, I'm going to call it science, but like the food industry has made products that make you crave stuff because it blocks these hormones. You've got to get that stuff out of your diet. They've got to get that stuff out of your world. And I don't care if your kids like it or not. Understand that you're, if we don't start changing what we put in our body, you're giving an ability for that food industry to take them captive and make them basically gold mines for them for the rest of their lives because we weren't willing to tell them no and quit eating that stuff. And it's unfortunate that the food industry is that way and it's going to take a lot of work to get that to where it's not that way. Case in point, food dyes, guys, have been known since the early 2000s to be a problem. They just took it off the market last year. Good hell. If it takes 20 years for us to make a change in good science, understand that this is the same thing we got to understand with our food industry and the things you put in your body. There's that my wife has told me forever like abs are made in the kitchen. You have to change what you put in your body so your body had the chance to handle the onslaught. And I'm also saying, like, understand that you got we got we need to start working with what we put into our minds mentally, because having a dysregulated immune or nervous system is a big problem why people don't get the results they want, because they're in a constant fight or flight state. So let me kind of back up and kind of summarize this just as a whole. And I apologize I got off my soap on a soapbox a couple times. I want people to have success. I just do. Um I want to be as quick as painless as possible, but I also want it to be truthful, which means we need to change the signals that we're putting in our body and give it the chance to heal. So remove the things that are that are that are blocking the right signals.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Remove the things that are blocking the right signals. Okay? It's really important. That's the foods and that's the stressors. Whatever you're trying to then activate, activate the systems and the of each cell to regulate inflammation, to make cellular energy, and to clean up. And then be specific on what part of your body you're trying to focus on. If it has to do with like anything to do with soft tissue, that to me, that's making sure you're giving yourself collagen. If it had anything to do with brain, that's axial. If it had anything to do with the microbiome, that's a p84.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_00And I tell these are products I utilize. There's no substitute also for just changing your foods. I have found it forever easier to give somebody something to take to start with why I take, why I take things away. If I can give them a different toy, it's easier to take the other one, give it back to the other kid. When you can give people away where they start having success with the right things in their body, then it's easier for them to take stuff away. Hopefully that that makes sense. And I I want you to know, I think peptides are here to stay, which means I want you to be able to be empowered by how to have this conversation and understand what it means when somebody's doing a peptide and the and to help them get the most benefit, if that's you, if you're gonna get the most benefit, but at the same time understand you've got to come back to activating the body. Super, super important. Because your body, I'll say this again, your body, if it cannot make it, it cannot regulate it. And unless you're a type one diabetic where you're gonna have to inject yourself the rest of your life or have an insulin pump, I don't want people to have to rely upon something from the outside in forever. I want to get their bodies to make it so that their body can regulate like it's supposed to. Are we cool? All right. So what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna I'm gonna stop the recording right here, and I'm gonna give you the chance to ask questions, but I'm gonna encourage you to please ask the questions in the chat. I mean, I'll I'll answer the best I can. So give me one second to stop this.
SPEAKER_01Just so we don't have it recording.
